Studiobricks Assembly, 5×4 Triple-Wall

For years, my husband, Mike, has been begging me to invest in a top-tier sound room for my voice-over business. According to him, a business owner should invest 10% into their business each year. He says that, but I think he’s just tired of my grouchiness. What can I say? There are only so many leaf blowers, barking dogs, and idling trucks, a voice talent can handle. Either way, he was right.  Continue reading “Studiobricks Assembly, 5×4 Triple-Wall”

VO Tip Friday: Remember to Breathe

Breath is vital.

In life, it sustains us.

In voice-over, it gives our chords flexibility.

As a voice actor, it is easy to get anxious while reading copy. How does this director want me to sound? Did I interpret the copy correctly? I’ve got to nail this! Before you know it, you are ten takes in and your chords have a death-grip on the copy. It’s so hard to work with all that vocal pressure. Relax. Continue reading “VO Tip Friday: Remember to Breathe”

Lemon Crinkle Cookies

This Easter is a special one for our family. Glen, our beloved 18-month-old, is at the age where he can independently jump into the fun. He was only 8-months-old last Easter so we basically carried him from egg-to-egg while his cousins zipped around us. And while everyone else searched for prize eggs, Glen had the best time snuggling with Mom and Dad and giggling at all the fun. Life was simple. But I have a funny feeling that this Easter Mike and I will be racing to keep up. Yep, Easter will certainly blow his mind, as if Christmas hadn’t done that already! From his good morning Easter basket to the family egg hunt, from the Easter piñata to our family confetti egg war…

Glen will have a blast!

When asked what we’ll bring to the table this year, I decided on something sweet that would not demand a lot of time or effort. Welcome, Lemon Crinkles!  Continue reading “Lemon Crinkle Cookies”

Naughty & Nice Jell-o Shots

Let’s face it, we all have a bit of naughty and nice inside each and every one of us, and this treat will satisfy either of those urges. For the days when you’re feeling fun but tame, make this as a simple, sweet jell-o cup and share with the kids.

And for those “other” days when you’re feeling a bit more fun and frisky, splash in some vodka (or tequila!), shoot these babies back, and unwind.

You can bring these to a holiday party or devour them at home on Christmas Eve with the kiddos. Turn on a holiday movie, pop some popcorn, make a night of it. Personally, I feel these pair nicely with the movie Elf. Here’s the recipe, courtesy of Delish.com: Continue reading “Naughty & Nice Jell-o Shots”

Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls

Daily planning and multi-tasking are as vital to a voice-over momma as hot tea is to a set of strained vocal chords. We’re busy getting the kids fed and off to school, marketing our business, recording awesome audio for awesome clients, cleaning house, paying bills, recording more audio, running errands, hugging those kiddos when they get home, and prepping dinner, with more mic-time laced throughout the day.

On one of those more hectic days, dinner can easily get moved toward the bottom of the priority list. After all, pizza is only 10-digits and 45 minutes away, right? Continue reading “Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls”

A Voice-Over Mom’s Homemade Sensory Crawl Space

Forget the sparkles and baubles, when you’re a VO Mom on a budget, new gear is a luxurious delight. I recently acquired a pair of sweet, sweet Yamaha HS-7 studio monitors. Once all the gear was carefully unpacked, peeled out of its styrofoam casing, and plugged into the studio, I poured a glass of red and danced around the room – because, you know, new stuff is fun.

After I came down from that high, I was left with these two awesome Yamaha HS-7 boxes. Glen noticed them, too. And when your baby boy notices a very cool box… well, what else do you do but create an ugly, fun crawl space for him? (Oh, the things you can do with a box!)
